The event brings together industry, students, educators, and supporters to celebrate the next wave of talent shaping the future of NZ fashion.
We were honoured to present the Direct Sewing Award for Outstanding Design. Congratulations to Rachael Mueller, whose collection impressed with its strong design direction, technical construction, and creative execution. Her work reflects the skill and innovation that make New Zealand’s design community so exciting. She receives an Industrial Zoje Automatic Sewing Machine from us to help her power her next collection and future success.

Our Long Term Support of NZ’s Student Sewing and Design Community
Supporting New Zealand’s student design community is a core part of who we are as a business. For almost twenty years, Direct Sewing Machines & Supplies has worked closely with students, fashion schools, universities, and young designers to help them access the right equipment and knowledge.
Every year we supply hundreds of students with machines, overlockers, threads, needles, pattern making tools, and industrial equipment to complete their collections confidently. Whether students are working from home or in a studio, we make sure they have reliable tools that help develop good sewing technique and professional-quality results.
We proudly support the student industry through sponsorships, awards, discounted student supplies, giveaways, and ongoing partnerships with NZ design programmes. Empowering young designers helps grow the wider sewing industry and ensures a strong future for the fashion and textile sector in New Zealand.
A Look Into Massey University’s Exposure Exhibition
The Exposure Exhibition is a highlight on the national design calendar. Massey’s fashion students consistently present collections that combine strong creative concepts with advanced garment construction skills. From experimental silhouettes to sustainable fabric techniques, the craftsmanship on display continues to raise the standard of NZ fashion education.
Watching the students’ work up close reinforces why investing in young designers is so important. The attention to detail, pattern cutting, overlocking, finishing and textile development shown across the exhibition demonstrates the professional level being achieved by this next generation of makers.

Tools Students Use to Bring Their Collections to Life
Fashion students rely on solid, dependable equipment to complete their final collections. At Direct Sewing, we see first-hand the tools that support good outcomes.
Common machines and equipment used in student collections include:
• Industrial Plain sewing machines & overlockers for clean construction
• Industrial buttonhole machines
• Industrial keyhole machines
• Domestic sewing machines for home sewing and after hours work
• Pattern making equipment and rulers
• High quality threads, needles, and notions
Students across NZ choose trusted brands like Singer, Zoje, Jack, Brother, Juki, Elna, Janome, and Pfaff from us because we offer nationwide service support and ensure fast turnaround times during peak collection periods.
Proud to Support the Future of NZ Design
Being part of the sewing industry means supporting the people who will shape it for years to come. Celebrating student achievements, providing quality tools, and offering guidance whenever needed is something we value deeply.
Congratulations once again to Rachael Mueller for winning the Direct Sewing Award for Outstanding Design. And to all the talented Massey students who presented their collections, thank you for inspiring us and for contributing to the strength of New Zealand’s creative community.
